What is SLS?

SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is a harsh detergent and foaming agent. It is used in many commercial cosmetic products including shampoo, soap and toothpaste. It can also be found in food products (as a thickener), dishwashing detergents, as an emulsifier and penetrant in varnish and paint remover and in the formulation of injection-moulded explosives!

People who use soap which contains SLS find that their skin becomes dry, itchy or even irritated. This is probably why many people dislike using soap at all, as they believe all soaps are drying. This is not the case with hand-made glycerine soaps, which are free of SLS.

You will not find any SLS in Melusine Soap's products AT ALL.

Why use Melusine Soap?

You may be thinking 'what's so special about this small soap making business?' when there's many other larger companies out there doing what appears to be the same thing? Well let us give you some reasons!

1) As mentioned above, all our soaps are SLS free, making them very gentle on the skin and one less chemical in our daily lives to have to worry about.

2) All our soaps are made with the best ingredients on offer: fragrance oils, glycerine base, soap colourants, shimmering natural micas and other lovely additions like Organic Shea butter and Apricot kernel oil. These ingredients are all sourced from reputable UK-based suppliers as well!

3) All our soaps are vegetarian and most are vegan friendly (some contain honey) and none of the ingredients or final products are tested on animals.

4) All our soaps are safety assessed by a qualified cosmetic chemist and they are fully compliant with EU regulations in terms of ingredients labelling, ensuring that you're buying safe and correctly labelled products.

5) We use the minimal amount of packaging possible, to limit waste and ultimately limit our impact on the environment.

Do you use essential oils in your soap?

At present, we only use top quality fragrance oils in our products. This is because we love to offer a wide range of choices for our customers. You will find floral, herbal, sweet, juicy, fruity, edible, uplifting, mystical, cooling and warming fragrances within our range of soaps. Something to suit everyone!

However, we do plan to add essential oils to our range very soon, so watch this space!

Are you planning on expanding your product range?

Yes! We have already recently introduced luxury foaming bath butters and scrubs to our range of products. In 2011, we plan to expand our range to include solid shampoo, bath melts, massage bars/oils and body butters!
